What the New Government Could Mean for Employment and the Workforce

By Gareth Watkins
New government

The new government's policies herald a transformative era for employment and the workforce in the UK. Their "New Deal for Working People" aims to uplift wages, secure jobs, and support working families. Here's a closer look at what this means:

Genuine Living Wage
The government plan to introduce a real living wage, ensuring that wages reflect the cost of living, benefiting workers of all ages. This change promises to reduce poverty and narrow the pay gap across demographics.

Secure Employment
By banning zero-hour contracts and ending the practice of "fire and rehire," the new government intends to create a stable and predictable job market. This will allow workers to plan their futures with confidence, knowing their rights and pay are protected.

Flexible Working
Embracing technological advancements, the new government aims to make flexible working the norm, accommodating family needs and enhancing work-life balance. This approach is expected to boost productivity and employee satisfaction. This is good news for the charity Working Families who we have joined - alongside other leading businesses and charities - to form an APPG for Flexible and Family Friendly Working. The APPG ceased to exist during the recent dissolution of parliament due to the General Election, however is set to re-establish in the up-coming weeks.

Stronger Workers' Rights
The new government has committed to updating trade union legislation, promoting cooperative industrial relations. This shift from conflict to collaboration with trade unions is expected to lead to more stable and prosperous working conditions.

Economic Growth
By putting more money in workers' pockets, these new policies are designed to stimulate economic growth, foster innovation, and enhance the overall standard of living. A well-paid and secure workforce is seen as the foundation of a resilient economy.

The government believes its plan is pro worker and pro business aiming to modernise the workforce, ensure fair pay, and create a supportive environment for all workers. The hope is for a thriving, equitable economy where everyone can benefit.
